I’m willing to bet that a majority of you watch YouTube. It’s a form of entertainment so ingrained into our culture that it’s difficult to find anyone, young or old, who hasn’t professed to use it some casual capacity. It’s a great site for creative minds to produce content essentially free for everyone to view; it’s a digital marvel in breadth and accessibility. That’s why you should support your content creators in fighting against the unjust fair use practices that have plagued the platform since its inception.
It’s sad to see big name companies literally stealing money from channel creators on YouTube through their false copyright claims, but it’s been going on for a while now. Fair Use has been pretty clearly defined in the cases presented here, and it’s certainly a violation of free speech when lawyers haphazardly target reviews, parodies, or other forms of transformative work. This has been going on forever, but I sense that the larger, less media addicted public has little interest in what goes on behind the scenes. But this kind of bullying needs to end. Check out the video below for a more in-depth overview of the situation that YouTubers face on a daily basis, and maybe, consider supporting them by standing up to YoutTube’s flawed practices.
